INSPIRE Fellow

Looking back, my academic journey has been full of learning, challenges, and unexpected turns. I did my MSc in Ecology with a specialization in Ecological Informatics at Digital University Kerala, and those years shaped the way I think about research and problem-solving. Research can be tough, but having the right environment and support makes all the difference. I’m grateful for the experiences and opportunities that have brought me here, and I look forward to where this path takes me next.

The MSc Ecology with a specialization in Ecological Informatics was a transformative experience, with supportive faculty who provides valuable guidance. Beyond the understanding of the subject ecology, they provides with hands-on training in handling ecological datasets and geospatial technologies, helping to extract meaningful insights. It also opened doors to internships and off campus dissertation opportunities through collaborations with top institutions across the country which favours future opportunities in research. Overall, the course strengthened my technical skills and opened a gateway to pursue a career in scientific research.

I had the opportunity to pursue my MSc in Ecology from Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology (2021-2023). Overall, my experience in the MSc Ecology program was quite good. The curriculum offered a good balance of understanding ecological systems, sustainability, and conservation challenges —especially in areas from theoretical foundations in ecology to the introduction of practical applications in environmental management, GIS, and data science —which helped build a basic understanding of modern ecological challenges. One of the strengths of the program emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, integrating traditional ecological studies with the introduction of modern technological tools. This has been beneficial in understanding real-world environmental challenges and data-driven solutions. The program also provided opportunities for internships and collaborations with research organizations, allowing students to gain practical exposure. However, at times of the project, the availability of faculty for one-on-one mentorship was limited, potentially due to their involvement in multiple other projects. Nevertheless, like any academic program, there are areas for further refinement. More hands-on learning opportunities or deeper engagement with fieldwork could enhance the practical learning experience. And, certain technical aspects, such as advanced data analysis, could be more structured. More interactive sessions and hands-on projects would help bridge the gap between theory and application. At times, Some modules felt somewhat disconnected, and tighter integration between theoretical content and practical application might improve the learning experience. Overall, the MSc Ecology program equips students with a solid foundation for students interested in research, policy, and applied ecology, with a focus on integrating digital methodologies into ecological studies. though some enhancements in practical engagement could further improve its effectiveness.

Akshaya N C (2022-24)

@ ZSI, Kolkota

My passion for ecology began long before my master's through field activities like bird and odonate surveys with the Forest Department, WWF, and NGOs. Recognizing a technical knowledge gap in ecological research, I pursued an MSc in Ecology with a specialization in Ecological Informatics. This program transformed my perspective, equipping me with GIS and remote sensing skills to analyze landscapes and ecological patterns effectively. My master's project at the Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata, was an eye-opening experience, where I applied informatics-driven research. Now, as a Research Scholar in the Himalayan Mammals Project at the same institute, I am grateful for this interdisciplinary program that seamlessly integrates technology and conservation science.

Completing my MSc in Ecological Informatics from KUDSIT was a truly transformative experience. I was immediately drawn to the futuristic course structure that allowed me to explore multiple domains, an opportunity that resonated with my academic passions after graduating from the University of Delhi. Although I received offers from several prestigious universities abroad, financial constraints led me to seek a more affordable alternative, and that search ultimately pointed me to DUK where I found not only top-notch coursework but also a supportive community that has significantly enriched my learning journey.
